a couple months ago, i dressed up two of my favorite girls as if they were about to hit the town. these particular frocks don’t get enough action, because my actual life is so much more sedate than the fantasy.

Isa looks badass in the low-backed blue velvet dress with python boots — basically ready for New Year’s Eve 2014. this Elizabeth & James dress was featured in a post two summers ago, co-starring with a cello.

kyra looks equally party-proper in a draped LBD from Wayne. the platform heels actually belong to Isa, but these girls have equally tiny feet!

the only sad part of these outfits is that chicago is way too cold to be wandering around bare-legged. i won’t dare expose any skin ’til april.

next week, the MCA is sponsoring Bowie Ball, in honor of David Bowie, at Berlin. i have already started to put together outfits that i could potentially wear to this promising party. looking the best isn’t the point, and i’m not going to recreate a Bowie costume, but being sparkly and glam should be enough. i might also be tasked with dressing my friends and co-workers, but i think there are enough sequins in my closet for everybody.

omigod — sudden realization that i might have to put eye makeup on mon petit ami. yeahhhh

this get-up is actually kind of demure, but it’s almost entirely sequins. the ankle strap mules are velvet, which has a luster to it, and the vintage python clutch has a dark glitter to its scales. the silver pants are by Twenty Cluny, a design group  that really shines when it comes to the sequined stuff. the oversize tunic is vintage by Royal Feelings, made in India in the 80s.

as if that wasn’t enough glam, i threw on a long rope of mixed pearls, a pearl-and-acrylic cuff, and beaded hoop earrings. based on reading the above paragraph, you’d think i come off like Vanna White or one of the Ab Fab ladies, but it’s actually so chill and slouchy. (the cap of hair and lack of cleavage might be key to making this look minimalist-90s as opposed to maximalist-80s or even decadent-70s…. which means i need to keep experimenting until the party.

Shua sent along a couple angled shots of the silver pants, so you could see how the paint glimmers on the page. i actually love the way the lens focuses with an angled image. i also love the lavender wash in the background, which makes the silver and black pop. it’s more interesting than matte white, and helps balance the pose.

my boss was going through some dusty boxes and found a couple back issues of Punk Planet. this one features Jaime Hernandez of Love and Rockets fame. it is fantastic, and makes me miss Punk Planet so much. he used to lend support to Young Chicago Authors –where i worked– but at the time i didn’t understand how awesome he was. thank goodness Dan Sinker is still doing so much in chicago. (teaching at columbia, his tweets-book satire of rahm emmanuel, maintaining the time portal of infinite chicagos…)

anyway, the outfit is a quasi-plaid blouse from etoile isabel marant. (i say quasi because it’s yellow and black, which is barely plaid, and closer to check, right? it is also my ONLY plaid shirt.) over that, a sheer blue H&M sweater. the vintage jellyfish necklace is a piece my friend Vince found in a junk shop. the trousers are 3.1 Phillip Lim and the kitten heel sandals are Sigerson Morrison. it’s sort of artsy, the three blues with the near-cmpliment of dried mustard and the tonic of white.

someone looking at this photo will notice, first thing, that my toes are sans lacquer, and they will think it looks godawful. if i did toenail polish, lavender might have been nice.

how to do J.Crew better than J.Crew. i figured it out!

start with an amazingly sexy pencil skirt in a cray-cray pattern. this one is Versus Versace with a high thigh-slit and a knotted waist. the fluorescent and seaweed tones turn into flames licking at your hips. (i’m wearing this in a post from the springtime, too. it’s a great skirt.)

then add a casual t-shirt. this one is basic black and white stripes, stolen from my dude’s closet. it’s a micro-knit with the perfect drape, and of course it looks better with the sleeves shoved up on the shoulder.

finish with vintage cut-away pumps (fuschia will do, but anything bright should work) and a non-matchy clutch. for example, amazing vintage python. (this one is beyond.)

why this works for me, i don’t know. there’s no fashion math going on…besides perhaps the scale of the patterns. skinny stripes, small white flames. the vintage accessories add interest, but don’t distract from the main dish, which is the skirt. also, that selma blair hair is fine, basic, easy.

finish with a power stance and you’re set!

Elise Øverland :: Bianca Jagger

Elise Øverland, who hasn’t done a runway since February 11, 2001, is fanous for working mostly in black and white — or cream and a little bit of fleshtones. that last runway was an ice-skating rink, and the clothes were a color riot. why this designer, who used to dress rock n’ rollers, has pulled out of the game, i don’t know.

what i do know, is that this little silk romper — all formal cream with tiny studs and an attached cummerbund scarf — is very comfortable and allows plenty freedom of movement. also, just like a dress, it makes outfitting yourself very easy. all i needed was a go-to pair of dressy heels (gucci champagne) and simple earrings (green vintage crystals, for a color injection). it’s very much a white tuxedo for slightly-punk ladies. if i had bigger hair, it would be very Bianca Jagger.

Elise, we miss you. Don’t stay away too long!

thanksgiving, one of my favorite food-centric holidays, is a few weeks away. (i am not going to get into the political diatribe in this post, but schools need to stop teaching the Thanksgiving pilgrims-and-indians-were-friends myth.) although i probably won’t wear this to my family gathering — and will instead opt for something more covered-up — the ochre and mustard floral print is very much putting me in mind of a thanksgiving wreath. there is a dip to the neckline, but the collar pleats make it also a little ladylike.

this isn’t a dress, per se. the sari is a misprinted length found for cheap on Devon, and usually it is hanging as a canopy above my bed. (which makes for a wonderful, starry effect.)

back in the fall of 2009, dries van noten showed a piece on his Spring 2010 runway that was a sari, but tied and gathered in a nontraditional way.

here are some traditional sari styles, but i would feel like a terrible white person if i tried to jack this look. somehow it seems less co-opting to just appreciate the fabric for its beauty, and use it to an unexpected end. that aim made the DVN dress look so unique and fresh. there were other dresses on his runway that used sari fabric and wrapping, but with a european/deconstructivist approach.

because i will never be able to find or afford the DVN dress, and it has haunted me all these years, i attempted to recreate the effect myself. i used a Behnaz Sarafpour X Target prom dress as a base, and pinned the sari fabric to it, twisting and folding the length of it. even working carefully, the final effect is still sloppy, but you can see all the great elements of the material: the royal blue color, the stars, the gold-banded edges, the luxurious length, and the silky weight of the fabric.

thrown into the mix: champagne gucci peeptoes and a yellow rhinestone necklace.

i really wish comments worked on my blog, so that we could talk about this. even if i’m wrong as fuck and i’ll never be anything but a dumb white person with hopeful intentions and mixed-up methods.

last in this series for a minute, but i’m sure i’ll come up with a bunch more ways to incorporate this sweatshirt as the temperatures drop. in this look, i’m making the most of a bodycon topshop dress. stayed mostly tone-on-tone, but the pattern on the dress is pyramid studs, pearls and square-cut diamonds. the shoes stick with the theme by having a metal-edged ankle strap and ball-stud closures. obviously, d’orsay is mt favorite shape.

clearly, by pitchfork day 3, i was not caring so much. even though this is the only outfit element that i bought at Buffalo Exchange and thought, “festival season here i come” it is actually pretty chill. it’s vintage, sure, but it’s essentially a beaded tee shirt. summer shorts (Joe’s) and some clear, plastic sandals (Vogue, through Urban Outfitters) and boom. the sunglasses are Marc by Marc Jacobs and the bag is a repeat [Alexander Wang].

a bunch of roving photographers snapped pictures of the shoes or the purse, but i haven’t bothered to track down every blog. i thought that being shot for Chicago Magazine was pretty nice. i was also shot by Teen Vogue — and i did search that — but maybe i looked too old or un-trendy. not concerned. every day there were a bunch of folks that took my picture without permission; other asked my permission but had no credentials — it’s all good. we are at the fest to look and listen, otherwise we could stay home and make the most of our headphones. certainly though, everything sounds better while savoring an ice cream cone.

the last picture is courtesy of GlitterGuts, a local photobooth-and-party outfit run by my roommate and hometown hero, Eric Lab Rat. he had organized an afterparty at Beauty Bar that night, the umpteenth iteration of R. Kelly Bump n’ Grindcore. though we were footsore, G (yes, he’s wearing my tee shirt and black studded rings) and i made it by for a little extra dancing. the GlitterGuts R. Kelly party is always good vibes. the picture that Eric shot is my favorite of the whole weekend — it’s the one in which i look happiest and feel most beautiful.

on the second day of pitchfork, i really went for it. nothing was trendy, exactly, but there was some flashbulb-bait involved. if you were going to play festival streetstyle bingo, the card would need squares for Crazy Sunglasses, Kimono, Fun Purse, and Seapunk Hair. (probably also Cowboy Boots, Booty Shorts, and Parasol, etc.)

because i haven’t figured out how to do links — which is really  poor manners on my part — i put the html underneath the respective photographs… except for the Chicago Tribune page. having our picture taken by Justin Barbin was a treat. he is adorable and super-friendly.

for the outfit, there are a few differences between the illustrated version and the festival photographs, based on practical decisions: karen walker fluoro sunnies, no earrings, (hello, navigating drunken crowds, clips will fall off) By Phillippe triple triangle necklace, chinese laundry d’orsay flats, and my alexander wang crossbody.

also, because i am a terrible person, i dressed my boyfriend. head to toe, everything he is wearing is mine, but because i dress like a garçonne, and because he is so beautiful, he looked quite natural. he was even shot for the FreePeople blog on his own. To quote the FP journalist, “This was my favorite look of all. So casual, so fashionable. White and navy and done!”
